New Zealand:
New Zealand was also an attractive destination for English families wanting to take advantage of the oportunities of the "new country".
In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Maori chiefs, bringing New Zealand into the British Empire. Largescale emigration from England and Scotland followed. Most of the SPEAK families who went to New Zealand went from the North of England, although one Shropshire family is known to have done so. (see links above)
If you can add anything further on the English origins of the Halifax Yorkshire families, please contact us ! Refer to the Lancashire and Yorkshire page for some general notes on the Yorkshire Speak families.
